Genuineness

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I demonstrate genuineness in multiple contexts by consistently exhibiting honesty, authenticity, and integrity across

various interactions and responsibilities. This honesty fosters an environment of safety and openness,

which is essential for effective counseling. Additionally, I model trustworthiness, fairness, and truthfulness, thereby

establishing credibility and positive rapport with clients, peers, and supervisors. I also show congruence between

my actions and words, which reflects sincerity and authenticity, key components of genuineness.

I demonstrate a sincere desire to improve and align my behaviors, highlighting my commitment to ethical and

personal growth. Such behaviors exemplify the core qualities of genuineness, which are vital for building effective

therapeutic relationships and fostering a professional environment rooted in

trust and integrity (American Counseling Association, 2014).

Genuineness is at the heart of my practice and interactions. I believe that being authentic and true to myself

allows me to build real connections with others. I strive to be honest and transparent in every moment, recognizing

that vulnerability and sincerity foster trust and deepen relationships. When I am genuine, I create a safe space

where others feel valued and understood. I am committed to continuously reflecting on my actions and beliefs,

and I genuinely desire to grow and align my behaviors with my core values. For me, authenticity is not just a

professional standard but a personal commitment to be real, compassionate,

and trustworthy in all that I do.

Professional and ethical standards:

ACA Code of Ethics Standard A.1.a, A.4.b

Standard A.1.a: Demonstrate a commitment to practicing with honesty, integrity, and fairness. This means being truthful and transparent in all professional interactions, maintaining trustworthiness, and acting ethically at all times.

Standard A.4.b: Recognize and respect the boundaries of competence. CITs should only provide services within their scope of training and expertise, seek supervision or consultation when necessary, and continually develop their skills to ensure ethical practice.

Together, these standards guide CITs to uphold honesty, integrity, and professionalism while being mindful of their competencies and responsibility to clients.

CACREP Common Core Area Standards

2.F.2.H: Counselors in training are expected to demonstrate ethical behavior consistent with the standards of the counseling profession, including honesty, integrity, and respect for client confidentiality and boundaries. They should also recognize their limitations and seek supervision or consultation when appropriate to ensure ethical practice.

2.F.5.f: Counselors in training must understand and adhere to ethical standards related to professional conduct, including maintaining trustworthiness and acting with fairness and honesty in all professional interactions.
